Leanne Whiting is a creative and perceptive teacher known for her unwavering dedication to practicing and sharing the life-affirming and transformational practices of yoga.
Acknowledged for her grounded presence and playful nature, Leanne creates an optimal balance of intentional and intelligent sequenced classes, combined with her playful nature and honest approach which challenges students physically, mentally, and whole heartedly. She is known for creating a welcoming and supportive environment where students leave feeling a greater connection to themselves and an integral part of their community. Leanne is conscious of individual needs and skillfully guides students safely through sequential poses allowing for physical challenges, personal growth and empowerment.
Leanne’s first experience with yoga began when she was living in Hong Kong twelve years ago when she was training vigorously for open water swims, adventure races, and outrigger canoeing. She attended her first class in efforts to heal a re- occurring sport injury and has not strayed far from her mat since. While it was at first the physical discipline that kept her returning to the practice, it was a pivotal awakening when she realized there was more to the practice than the movements. It was the silence, the conscious pause that came at the end of the class that kept her returning to the practice. It was at this realization that became a source of inspiration to continue to learn the depths of the yoga path.
A natural teacher, Leanne transitioned from an elementary school classroom to immersing herself into the study of yoga and soon after began teaching yoga to all as a means to share the vast benefits of the practice with others. Despite practicing a wide variety of styles of yoga, Leanne focused her studies and teachings primarily from an Anusara and Iyengar yoga method and has studied with some of the most widely renowned yoga teachers, including Patrick Creelman, Sianna Sherman and Barrie Risman. Leanne continues to study closely with Barrie Risman in Montreal, adapting an alignment based, heart-centered philosophy as an inspiration to each class.
As Leanne continued to integrate yoga philosophy with alignment techniques in poses, she had a strong desire to create deeper connections off of the yoga mat. Leanne immersed herself into the study of Non-Violent Communication and Coaching for Transformation and soon began mentoring with leadership coach and facilitator Martha Lasley. Leanne now uniquely blends modern transformative tools with ancient yoga philosophy to support students and clients to connect to themselves emotionally, physically and spiritually. It is through these practices that Leanne supports individuals in understanding themselves deeply and intimately.
Leanne’s extensive background in Child Development and Child Psychology, along with her Educational experience continues to bring her back to sharing these meaningful practices with children and adults alike. She is the founder of Grow A Lotus Yoga, a school of yoga that continues to evolve with practices for the body, mind and heart for children and adults. She has opened the only school for children certified through Yoga Alliance. Her school programs and kids camps have expanded and she is respected throughout the community as a leader in children’s yoga.
Leanne is the co-director of WHEEL (Whole-Hearted, Eco-Conscious, Empathic Learnings), an association she has developed with Julie Coleman as a means to educate children through the practices of yoga. She teaches a 200 hour alignment based teacher training program and a children’s yoga teacher training program, as well as she offers transformational retreats in Atlantic Canada and Mexico.
Leanne continues to practice yoga with attention to subtle alignment in the body, inquiry and discovery of the mind, and a playful enthusiasm of the heart. It is with this intention that she aims to support others in living life fully and to their highest potential.
